Unakoti Amazes with Massive Rock-Cut Sculptures
Unakoti in Tripura is a remarkable ancient pilgrimage site known for its gigantic rock-cut carvings of Hindu deities set amidst forested hills. Believed to date back to the 7th–9th centuries CE, the site showcases striking sculptures, including a towering 30-foot depiction of Shiva and large carvings of Ganesha.
The name “Unakoti,” meaning “one less than a crore,” is tied to local legends that speak of millions of stone idols associated with the site, adding to its mystique and cultural significance.
