1. Assam – Storm and Heavy Rain Alert in Lower Assam
Severe Weather Damage
A powerful storm accompanied by heavy rainfall affected parts of Lower and Western Assam during 18–19 May 2026. At least 12 people were reported injured, while districts such as Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Dhubri witnessed damage to houses, trees, electric lines and local infrastructure. The weather disturbance disrupted normal life in several areas and led to concern over further rainfall activity.
Monsoon and Disaster Preparedness
The heavy rainfall warning was linked with the early advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the North East. Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh were placed under alert for heavy rainfall conditions. Such pre-monsoon and early monsoon storms are significant for Assam because they often cause localised flooding, erosion, crop damage, power disruption and transport problems.
2. Assam – Essential Commodity Price Monitoring
Government Monitoring of Prices
The Assam government directed district officials to monitor the prices of essential commodities to prevent artificial price rise. The Chief Minister instructed authorities to take strict action against traders involved in unjustified price hikes. The action may include cancellation of trade licences in serious cases.
Consumer Protection Measures
The direction came at a time when weather disturbances and supply-related rumours could affect market behaviour. Essential commodities such as rice, pulses, vegetables, edible oil, fuel and cooking gas directly affect household budgets. Price monitoring at district level helps maintain market stability and prevents hoarding, black marketing and panic buying.

The project is expected to use inland waterways to reduce road congestion and provide an alternative public transport mode.
Importance for Brahmaputra-Based Mobility
Guwahati is located along the Brahmaputra, making it suitable for water-based public transport if supported by terminals, vessels, safety systems and last-mile connectivity. Policy for Urban Water Transport
The Centre circulated a draft National Water Metro Policy for inter-ministerial consultation. The policy is linked with the plan to develop Water Metro systems in selected cities, including Guwahati in the first phase. The focus is on promoting sustainable, low-emission and integrated transport using inland waterways.
Transport and Urban Planning Dimension
Water Metro services can support cities located along rivers, lakes, backwaters and coastal water channels. Such systems require proper vessel design, passenger terminals, safety regulation, ticketing integration, disaster preparedness and last-mile connectivity. The policy can help create a framework for standardisation, funding, operation and coordination among ministries and States.

These measures were presented as part of an administrative reform push to reduce procedural burden.
Seed, Fertiliser and Pesticide Regulation
