1. Assam – Cyber Crime Cases Declined Sharply in 2024
Major Decline in Registered Cases
Assam recorded a decline of more than 55% in cyber crime cases in 2024. This is a significant development because the State had earlier reported a very high number of cyber crime cases, including 4,846 cases in 2021, when Assam was among the top five States and Union Territories in India in terms of cyber crime incidents. The fall in cases indicates improvement in cyber policing, awareness, reporting mechanisms, preventive surveillance and digital crime monitoring.
Cyber Security and Governance Dimension
Cyber crimes include online fraud, identity theft, financial scams, cyber stalking, phishing, hacking, digital extortion and social media-related offences. Assam’s decline in cyber crime cases is connected with technology-driven policing, better public awareness, cyber cells, digital investigation tools and coordination between police, banks and online platforms. For governance, cyber security has become important because digital payments, Aadhaar-linked services, online education, e-governance and mobile banking are expanding rapidly across the State.
2. Assam – Amrit Bharat Express Shows Strong Demand in Assam and Bengal
Revenue Crosses ₹23 Crore
Amrit Bharat Express trains running under the North Frontier Railway zone have shown strong passenger demand in Assam and West Bengal. Seven pairs of Amrit Bharat Express trains are presently originating from Assam and West Bengal under this railway zone. These trains have reportedly earned more than ₹23 crore, showing good occupancy and public response.
Railway Connectivity in the North East
Amrit Bharat Express is designed as a non-AC, affordable long-distance train service with improved passenger facilities. For Assam and the North East, such trains help improve long-distance connectivity for students, workers, traders, patients and tourists. Better railway connectivity also supports regional mobility, economic integration, market access and tourism. The growth in demand shows the importance of affordable rail transport in connecting Assam with the rest of India.
3. Assam – Gauhati High Court Introduces Work-from-Home SOP

The Gauhati High Court introduced a Standard Operating Procedure for work-from-home from 25 May 2026. The SOP will remain in operation till 26 June 2026, after which it will be reviewed. The decision was taken as part of a fuel-saving initiative, indicating the use of flexible administrative arrangements in response to resource-management concerns.

Work-from-home arrangements can reduce daily commuting, fuel consumption, traffic pressure and vehicular emissions. A US-based researcher from Assam, Dr Bikul Das, highlighted the role of music therapy in improving quality of life for cancer patients. He stated that music therapy can help release specific “happy hormones” that soothe the patient’s mind. The discussion connects mental health, cancer care and supportive therapy.

Music therapy is used as a complementary therapeutic approach in healthcare. It may help reduce anxiety, pain perception, stress and emotional distress among patients undergoing difficult treatment. In cancer care, psychological well-being is an important part of patient management along with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, nutrition and palliative care. 5. North East – NEC Allocates Funds for Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland

The North Eastern Council allocated ₹550 crore for Arunachal Pradesh and ₹515 crore for Nagaland for development projects. NEC-supported projects have contributed to infrastructure, tourism and eco-development in the North Eastern region. The allocation is aimed at strengthening regional development through targeted investment in key sectors.

The North Eastern Council plays an important role in planning and supporting development in the North East. 6. North East – PRAGATI 2026 Military Exercise Begins in Meghalaya
First Edition at Umroi
The first edition of the multilateral military exercise PRAGATI 2026 began at Umroi Military Station in Meghalaya. The exercise is being conducted from 18 May to 31 May 2026 with participation from India and 12 friendly countries from the Indian Ocean Region and Southeast Asia. The participating countries include Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
Defence and Regional Cooperation
PRAGATI stands for Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. The exercise focuses on counter-terrorism operations in jungle and semi-mountainous terrain. It is linked with India’s SAGAR doctrine, Neighbourhood First policy and Act East policy. Since Meghalaya provides terrain suitable for such training, the exercise also strengthens the strategic role of the North East in regional defence cooperation.
7. India – Mission on “Arunachal Kiwi” Launched
Cluster-Based Kiwi Development Mission
A mission titled “Arunachal Kiwi: The USP of Arunachal Pradesh” was launched as a cluster-based kiwi cultivation and value-chain development programme. The mission has a total budget outlay of ₹167 crore and follows a whole-of-government, convergence-led approach. It combines interventions from agriculture, rural development and food-processing-related schemes.
Cold Chain and Value Addition
The mission aims to extend the shelf life of kiwi, create 2,000 metric tonnes of cold-chain capacity and improve processing and value-addition facilities. Six integrated cluster-level post-harvest management hubs have been identified in areas such as Ziro Valley, Dirang and Kalaktang. Arunachal Pradesh is already known for kiwi cultivation, and the mission seeks to improve farmers’ income through storage, branding, processing and better market linkage.
8. India – Indian Navy to Get High Power Microwave Capability under ADITI 3.0
Defence Technology Contract
A defence technology company secured an Indian Navy contract under the ADITI 3.0 innovation framework to integrate and commission a High Power Microwave system for naval platforms. The project is supported by iDEX and the Defence Innovation Organisation under the Ministry of Defence.
Directed-Energy Warfare
High Power Microwave technology is a directed-energy capability that uses electromagnetic energy to disable enemy electronics, sensors, drone swarms and unmanned systems. Such systems are becoming important in modern warfare because naval platforms face increasing threats from drones, electronic warfare assets and unmanned systems. The project also reflects India’s push for indigenous defence innovation, private-sector participation and advanced technology development under defence modernisation programmes.
9. Science and Technology – World’s First AI-Designed Gene Editor for Crops
Plant-OpenCRISPR1 Developed
Scientists at ICAR-Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack developed and validated Plant-OpenCRISPR1, described as the world’s first AI-designed genome-editing platform for plants. The platform was tested using rice as a model crop and allows gene knockout, base editing and prime editing through AI-designed enzymes.
Agriculture Biotechnology
Plant-OpenCRISPR1 aims to develop climate-resilient, disease-resistant, high-yielding and nutritionally improved crop varieties without introducing foreign genes. Unlike traditional CRISPR systems that use naturally occurring microbial proteins, this platform uses AI-designed enzymes. Large language models trained on protein databases were used for advanced enzyme design. This development links artificial intelligence, biotechnology, crop science and food security.
10. Economy – India’s First Weather Derivatives Contract “RAINMUMBAI”
Weather-Risk Trading Product
The National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange launched India’s first exchange-traded weather derivatives contract named RAINMUMBAI. It is scheduled to be implemented from 1 June 2026 and is designed to hedge financial exposure caused by rainfall extremes and rainfall variability in Mumbai and nearby areas.
Monsoon Risk and Market Use
The contract was developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and is based on official rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department. It will use rainfall observations from Santa Cruz and Colaba and follow a Cumulative Deviation Rainfall model that measures deviation from the long-period average during the June–September monsoon season. Farmers, construction firms, power utilities, logistics operators and banks with agricultural loan portfolios may use such contracts to manage weather-related financial risk.
11. Economy – India’s GDP Forecast Revised Downward
UN DESA Projection
India’s GDP growth forecast for FY27 was revised down to 6.4% from an earlier estimate of 6.6%. The revision was linked to global uncertainties and economic shocks arising from the West Asia crisis. Inflation in India was projected at 4.9% for FY27, within the Reserve Bank of India’s target range.
ICRA Projection
ICRA also revised India’s GDP growth forecast for FY27 downward by 30 basis points to 6.2%, compared to its earlier estimate of 6.5%. Elevated crude oil prices due to the West Asia conflict were cited as a key reason. India’s Q4 FY26 GDP growth was estimated to moderate to a three-quarter low of 7%, while merchandise exports declined by 2.8% year-on-year in Q4 FY26 due to slow global growth and energy supply disruptions.
12. Environment and Energy – Tata Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Sign Clean Energy Pact
5,000 MW Clean Energy Framework
Tata Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation signed an agreement to establish a clean energy cooperation framework for developing 5,000 MW clean energy capacity in Bhutan. The agreement includes technical support, training and capacity-building arrangements for Bhutan’s renewable energy sector.
India-Bhutan Energy Cooperation
Bhutan is known for its hydropower potential, and clean-energy cooperation has long been a major part of India-Bhutan relations. Under the pact, training programmes will be conducted through the Tata Power Skill Development Institute. The cooperation can support clean energy generation, skill development, power-sector workforce training and regional energy security. It also fits into the broader transition towards low-carbon electricity and cross-border energy cooperation in South Asia.
13. Awards and Literature – International Booker Prize 2026
“Taiwan Travelogue” Wins
Taiwanese author Yáng Shuāng-zǐ and Taiwanese-American translator Lin King won the International Booker Prize 2026 for Taiwan Travelogue. It became the first Mandarin Chinese novel to win the prize. The award ceremony was held at Tate Modern in London, and the £50,000 prize money was shared equally between the author and translator.
Literary Background
Taiwan Travelogue is a historical fiction novel originally published in Mandarin Chinese in 2020. It was translated into English by Lin King in 2024. The book had earlier won recognition including the 2024 National Book Award for Translated Literature in the United States and Taiwan’s Golden Tripod Award. The International Booker Prize recognises translated fiction published in English and gives equal importance to the author and translator.
14. Science, Defence and Maritime Security – INS Sanghmitra Launched
Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers launched INS Sanghmitra, the first of four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Indian Navy, at Kolkata. The vessel belongs to the Shachi-class NGOPV category and is being built under the Buy Indian-IDDM category.
Technical Features and Naval Role
INS Sanghmitra is around 113 metres long, has a beam of 14.6 metres, displacement of about 3,000 tonnes, maximum speed of 23 knots and endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots. The vessel is named after Sanghmitra, daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who helped spread Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Offshore Patrol Vessels are used for maritime surveillance, coastal security, anti-piracy patrol, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets and monitoring India’s maritime zones.
15. Sports – Europa League and Indian Sports Updates
Aston Villa Ends Long Trophy Wait
Aston Villa won the Europa League after defeating SC Freiburg 3–0 in the final held in Istanbul. The victory ended the club’s long wait for a major trophy and marked another major European success for coach Unai Emery. Morgan Rogers was later named Europa League Player of the Season after scoring and assisting in the final and contributing throughout the tournament.
Indian Sports and Anti-Doping Measures
India proposed stronger amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, including jail terms of five to ten years and fines up to ₹5 lakh for those involved in supplying, administering or trafficking banned substances to athletes. Separately, Rajasthan’s para archer Shyam Sundar Swami was selected for the Indian team for the 2026 Asian Para Games, scheduled in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 18 to 24 October 2026.
