1. Assam – Ranjeet Kumar Dass Elected Speaker of 16th Assam Legislative Assembly
Unanimous Election as Speaker
Ranjeet Kumar Dass was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly. He is a senior BJP leader and four-time MLA. His election took place during the first session of the newly constituted Assembly after the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

Infiltration as a Major Concern
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in his address to the Assembly, stated that infiltration from neighbouring countries continues to remain a major concern for Assam. Counter-Radicalisation Cell

3. Assam – ₹376 Crore Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Flyover Inaugurated in Guwahati

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Flyover at Lalganesh in Guwahati. The flyover was constructed at a cost of ₹376 crore and connects Cycle Factory at Garbhanga with Lalganesh, improving connectivity between the southern and western parts of the city.
Completed Ahead of Schedule
The project was assigned on 8 March 2024 with a 30-month deadline but was completed in around 26 months. This makes it a major example of fast urban infrastructure execution in Guwahati.

The flyover is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve movement towards major hospitals and provide smoother road connectivity in one of Guwahati’s busy urban corridors. 4. North East – NCC Cadets Airlifted from Manipur to Assam
Emergency Evacuation by Air Force
A total of 132 NCC cadets were evacuated by the Indian Air Force from Manipur to Assam amid protests, blockades and security restrictions. The cadets had been participating in the North Eastern Region Flying Camp in Imphal from 11 May to 20 May 2026.
Evacuation to Guwahati and Jorhat
Due to restrictions on road movement and the worsening security situation, the cadets were airlifted to safer locations in Guwahati and Jorhat. The incident highlights the role of the Air Force in emergency evacuation, crisis response and coordination during internal security disturbances.

The 68th Session of the Governing Body Meeting of the Asian Productivity Organisation concluded in New Delhi. The three-day meeting was held from 20 to 22 May 2026 at Bharat Mandapam.

Saudi Arabia joined the International Big Cat Alliance as its 26th member nation. The alliance is a treaty-based global platform focused on conservation of big cats and their habitats.
Conservation Coverage
The International Big Cat Alliance focuses on seven major big cat species: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma. It promotes cooperation among range countries for habitat protection, conservation funding, anti-poaching measures and scientific management.
India’s Role
The alliance was first proposed by India and reflects India’s leadership in wildlife conservation. India has long experience in tiger conservation through Project Tiger and also plays an important role in global conservation discussions on biodiversity and ecosystem protection.
12. Economy – RBI Dollar Sales and Record Surplus Transfer
Net Dollar Sales to Support Rupee
The Reserve Bank of India sold a net $53.1 billion in FY26 to manage pressure on the rupee. This was higher than the previous financial year and reflected stronger intervention in the foreign exchange market amid global uncertainty, capital outflows and crude oil-related pressure.
