2. Assam and North East – Focus on Securing the Siliguri Corridor
Strategic Border Fencing Move
Assam welcomed the move to strengthen border fencing in sensitive areas near the Siliguri Corridor. The Siliguri Corridor is popularly called the “Chicken’s Neck” because it is the narrow land link that connects the North Eastern States with the rest of India. Strengthening border security in this region is connected with national security, regional connectivity and protection of the North East.
Importance of the Corridor
The corridor is strategically sensitive because it lies close to international borders and acts as the main land bridge for movement of people, goods, security forces and essential supplies to the North East. Any disruption in this region can affect Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim.
Security and Connectivity Angle
Modern fencing, surveillance, border roads, intelligence coordination and quick-response systems are important for this region. Better security around the corridor can help control illegal movement, smuggling, cross-border threats and possible disruption to national logistics.
3. Assam – Appeal Against Cow Slaughter During Eid-ul-Zuha
Appeal by Religious Bodies
Several Eidgah management bodies and Muslim organisations in Assam appealed to the community to avoid cow sacrifice during the upcoming Eid-ul-Zuha. The appeal requested people to choose alternative sacrificial animals such as goats or sheep in order to maintain peace and social harmony.
Response from State Leadership
The Assam Chief Minister welcomed the appeal and described it as a positive gesture for communal harmony. The issue is socially sensitive in Assam because of the State’s diverse religious and cultural composition. Such appeals from community organisations are aimed at preventing tension during religious occasions.
Social Harmony Dimension
The development reflects the role of community leadership in maintaining peace. It also shows how religious practices, local customs, law and social sensitivity are often balanced through dialogue and mutual understanding.
4. North East – Indian Air Force Evacuated 132 NCC Cadets from Manipur
Emergency Airlift from Imphal

8. India – Cold Water Fisheries Emerging as a Pillar of Blue Economy
Growth of Mountain Fisheries
India’s cold water fisheries sector is emerging as an important part of the Blue Economy. Earlier, it was mainly limited to traditional fishing in Himalayan streams, but it is now developing into a modern aquaculture system supported by scientific farming and improved infrastructure.
Livelihood and Nutrition
Cold water fisheries support livelihoods in hill and mountain regions. They also improve access to nutritious food and can support eco-tourism, recreational fishing and sustainable mountain development. Trout and other cold-water fish species have commercial potential in Himalayan and North Eastern States.
Infrastructure and Regional Development
Scientific fish farming, hatcheries, feed systems, cold chains, training centres and market linkages are important for this sector. States with suitable cold-water resources can use fisheries as a source of income generation, tourism promotion and rural entrepreneurship.
