1. India–US Trade Negotiations

India’s commerce delegation held “constructive” talks in Washington on an interim trade deal with the US. Discussions focused on market access, non-tariff barriers and technical standards, under a framework for a broader bilateral agreement. India reported that both sides made progress on issues like tariffs and export quotas. The push comes amid broader efforts to double two-way trade; the Commerce Ministry described the engagement as positive toward finalizing an interim pact to boost exports and investment.

2. India–Italy Defence Cooperation

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto in New Delhi and exchanged the 2026-27 military cooperation plan. Singh conveyed India’s concerns about Italy supplying sensitive defence technology to Pakistan, reinforcing a “red line” in tech transfers. Both ministers reaffirmed strategic partnership and discussed expanding defence industry ties under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, including a recent Leonardo–Adani helicopter JV. They also highlighted cooperation in maritime security via the Indian Ocean Information Fusion Centre. This deepens India–Italy ties amid Europe’s intent to re-enter the Indian defence market.

3. Gaza Ceasefire Remains Fragile

Six months after the October 2025 Gaza ceasefire, violence has not fully stopped. Israeli strikes and cross-border clashes continue intermittently, and over 700 Palestinians have been killed since the truce began. Aid delivery has remained well below promised levels, exacerbating Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. UN observers describe the ceasefire as “increasingly fragile” – more of a temporary truce than a lasting peace. The conflict’s persistence, with 700+ killed by Apr 2026, underscores lack of enforcement and raises broader regional tensions amid concurrent Middle East wars.

4. Ganga Expressway Inauguration

On 29 April 2026, PM Modi opened the 594-km greenfield Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. The access-controlled highway, connecting Meerut in west UP to Ballia in east UP, links 12 districts and is meant to spur trade, industry and agriculture in the region. Modi called it a “new lifeline” that will boost economic growth by reducing travel time across the Ganga plain. The expressway is expected to facilitate movement of goods such as milk and fruits, connect NCR industries to eastern UP, and support clusters in pharmaceuticals, leather and textiles along the route. It was completed in under five years, reflecting the government’s push for infrastructure to drive development in Uttar Pradesh.

5. Vande Bharat Train Extension

On 30 April, a new Vande Bharat Express route was inaugurated to extend train service from Katra to Jammu Tawi. Previously running between Srinagar and Katra, the semi-high-speed train will now continue to Jammu, cutting travel time between the Kashmir Valley and Jammu. Starting 2 May 2026, the train Nos. 26401/26402 will cover around 236 km in about 4 hours 50 minutes via Katra and Banihal. Operating six days a week except Wednesday, this is hailed as a historic boost for J&K connectivity. The service, with a 20-coach Vande Bharat rake, will significantly improve comfort and pilgrim access between Srinagar and Jammu.

6. RBI’s Mission SAKSHAM for UCBs

On 29 April, RBI launched Mission SAKSHAM, a nationwide capacity-building scheme for Urban Co-operative Banks. The program will train some 1.4 lakh people, including board members, managers, risk officers, etc., via regional workshops and e-learning in local languages. Its goal is to strengthen governance, risk management and customer service in UCBs, making them more resilient and professionally run. RBI Deputy Governor described SAKSHAM as a collaborative effort with state bodies and banks to upgrade governance and standards in the cooperative banking sector. The mission underscores RBI’s drive to enhance financial stability by improving oversight and digital skills in smaller lenders.

7. EPFO Launches E-PRAAPTI Portal for Dormant Accounts

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation will soon launch E-PRAAPTI, an Aadhaar-enabled portal to help members access inoperative PF accounts. Many old EPF accounts, without linked UAN, lie dormant as workers change jobs. Through E-PRAAPTI, users can authenticate via Aadhaar to identify and reactivate such legacy accounts, link them to their current UAN, and initiate auto-settlement of small unclaimed balances. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the portal, in phased roll-out, will streamline tracking of old accounts, reduce paperwork and improve transparency. EPFO statistics show around 31.8 lakh inoperative accounts, nearly ₹10,181 crore, as of Mar 2025. The portal and auto-settlement policies aim to address these long-standing unclaimed balances.

8. PSBs Recruit 50,552 Staff in FY 2025–26

Public sector banks sharply ramped up hiring in FY26, sending offer letters to 50,552 new employees, a 33% jump from 37,860 in FY25. This was done through IBPS recruitment drives, as confirmed by the Finance Ministry. In the past 6 years, PSU banks have added around 1.5 lakh employees, reversing years of lean recruitment. By March 2025, PSBs had around 7.58 lakh total staff, with SBI accounting for around 31% of the workforce. The ministry noted that expanding the workforce will ease operational pressures and improve customer service. Indeed, the trend reflects banks’ efforts to bolster branch networks and digital services as credit demand grows, reducing backlogs and strengthening retail operations.

9. Maharashtra AI Policy Approved

The Maharashtra cabinet approved a new Artificial Intelligence Policy 2026 on 29 April, targeting ₹10,000 crore in AI investment and creating 1.5 lakh jobs. The policy will establish six AI excellence centers and five “AI Innovation Cities” to foster R&D and startups. It plans to train 2 lakh youths in AI skills and provide 2,000 GPUs across the state to support AI infrastructure. A ₹500-crore VC fund, with ₹250 crore state-contributed, will back AI startups. The state will also incentivize AI adoption in MSMEs, with 5,000 firms supported, and education, and even develop Marathi-language AI databases. Notably, Maharashtra will create India’s first ethical AI framework. The policy is part of efforts to position the state as a digital innovation hub and generate skilled employment.

10. Google Cloud AI Hub in Visakhapatnam

On 28 April, Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu laid the foundation stone for the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Vizag. This is part of an Adani–Google–Airtel data center cluster, in which Google plans a $15 billion investment – one of India’s largest foreign direct investments. The AI Hub, with 1 GW capacity, will be a hyperscale cloud and AI data center, aimed at boosting jobs and digital infrastructure in the region. The project is expected to attract global tech firms and talent, cementing Andhra Pradesh’s role as an emerging AI/IT hub. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Adani leaders attended the ceremony. The massive investment reflects India’s push to become a cloud and AI powerhouse by improving infrastructure and FDI inflows.

11. IMD Predicts Above-Normal May Heatwaves

The India Meteorological Department’s May 2026 outlook warns of above-normal heatwave frequency in several regions. Areas likely to see excessive heatwave days include the Himalayan foothills such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, N. UP, NE Bihar, eastern coastal states such as Odisha, AP, TN, and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Overall, heatwave days in May may exceed normal by 1–4 days in these zones. However, widespread pre-monsoon rains are expected to keep daytime temperatures cooler in much of India. The IMD also predicts “warmer nights” due to cloudy conditions trapping heat. The report notes climate change as a factor in rising heat extremes and cautions that any El Niño could further stress monsoon prospects and agriculture.

12. National Green Hydrogen Mission

National Green Hydrogen Mission

India continues to accelerate its push for green hydrogen under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched Jan 2023. The mission targets 5 MMT annual production by 2030, supported by around 125 GW of dedicated renewable capacity. It has an initial ₹19,744 crore outlay to FY30, including ₹17,490 crore under the SIGHT scheme to incentivize electrolyzer manufacturing. Recent steps include recognizing major ports such as Kandla, Chennai, Paradip as hydrogen hubs and rolling out a Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme in April 2025 to ensure production emissions are low. The mission is projected to attract ₹8 lakh crore in investment and cut over ₹1 lakh crore in fossil fuel imports by 2030. These efforts reflect India’s strategy to use renewables, solar/wind, to decarbonize industry and transport, scaling up electrolyser production and green ammonia/methanol standards.

13. Supreme Court on Abortion Law

The Supreme Court, bench of CJI S. Kant and J. Bagchi, told the Centre to consider amending the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act to allow rape survivors to seek abortion beyond 20 weeks. This came in a case of a 15-year-old rape victim whose doctors sought to set aside an earlier order permitting a 30-week abortion. The Court emphasized the “pain, humiliation” of such survivors, saying no rigid time limit should bind rape cases. It noted that an “unwanted pregnancy” from child rape cannot be thrust on the victim, and adoption is an option. The bench urged that the final decision rest with the victim and her guardians, highlighting individual autonomy. Legal experts say this marks a push for reform: if implemented, laws would be more compassionate to sexual violence survivors, potentially raising the permissible limit in the Act.

14. West Bengal Assembly Elections

Tension has escalated in West Bengal ahead of the 4 May vote count. CM Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of using exit polls to demoralize TMC workers, claiming surveys are part of a strategy to undermine her party. She confidently predicted the TMC would win 226+ seats. Separately, TMC alleged “electoral fraud” after CCTV footage reportedly showed ballot boxes opened without party agents present. TMC workers protested outside counting centres, calling it “murder of democracy” and suspecting EVM tampering. The Election Commission has denied any wrongdoing, stating all strongrooms were properly sealed with observers. The exit polls have shown a tight race with the BJP gaining ground, but the final outcome will be known on 4 May. These developments underscore a highly charged contest and scrutiny over election management in the state.
