The Assamese feature film Aakuti (Longing) has been selected for the competition section of the New York Indian Film Festival 2026. The festival is scheduled to be held in New York City from 28 May to 31 May 2026. The film focuses on the emotional journey of an eight-year-old girl after the loss of her mother and presents a story rooted in grief, longing and human relationships.

The selection of Aakuti gives Assamese cinema another opportunity to reach an international audience. 5. Assam – Rare Black Panther Sighting

A rare black panther was sighted in Manas National Park, Assam, and the video of the elusive animal drew wide attention. A black panther is not a separate species but a melanistic form of leopard, where excess dark pigment gives the animal a black appearance. Such sightings are rare because these animals are secretive, mostly active during low-light conditions and usually live in dense forest habitats.

Manas National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Assam’s most important protected areas. Reports stated that over 1,000 refugees entered Champhai district since early May, while Mizoram’s total Myanmar refugee population has crossed 40,000. GeM Marks Incorporation Day 2026
Government e Marketplace observed its Incorporation Day 2026, marking the growth of India’s digital public procurement platform. GeM SPV was incorporated on 17 May 2017 as a Section 8 non-profit company under the Ministry of Commerce. It was created to make government procurement more transparent, efficient, paperless and inclusive.
Growth of Digital Procurement
The platform now hosts more than 1.36 lakh government buyers and nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers. Nearly 72% of active sellers are Micro and Small Enterprises. During FY 2025–26, more than 11 lakh MSEs received over 51 lakh orders worth ₹2.36 lakh crore. Women-led MSEs secured procurement orders worth more than ₹28,000 crore, while SC/ST entrepreneurs received orders exceeding ₹6,000 crore. This shows the role of GeM in digital governance, ease of doing business, procurement transparency and inclusive economic participation.
9. India – Supreme Court Judge Strength Increased
Sanctioned Strength Raised to 38
The President approved an increase in the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court of India. The number of judges has been increased from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India. With the Chief Justice included, the total sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court becomes 38 judges. This change amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956.
Judicial Capacity and Pendency
The move follows the Union Cabinet’s approval to raise the judge strength by four. The objective is to improve the functioning of the Supreme Court, which deals with constitutional matters, appeals, special leave petitions, public interest litigations and nationally significant legal questions. Increasing judge strength is expected to help manage rising case pendency and support faster disposal of cases. The expenditure for judges, staff and related facilities will be met from the Consolidated Fund of India.
10. India – CBSE Digital Evaluation and Revaluation Fee
Answer Script Fee Reduced
CBSE reduced charges for post-result services after concerns were raised regarding the On-Screen Marking system used in Class 12 evaluation. Students can now obtain answer scripts at a lower cost, with the answer sheet copy fee reduced to ₹100. Reports also noted reduction in verification and revaluation-related charges, making the process more affordable for students who want to challenge or review their results.
Transparency in Evaluation
The On-Screen Marking system involves scanning answer sheets and evaluating them digitally. Nearly 98 lakh answer sheets were reportedly scanned and evaluated under the process, while some answer scripts were still physically re-evaluated. The reduction in fees has been seen as a step towards improving transparency, affordability and accessibility in board examination evaluation. Provisions were also reported for refund if marks increase after re-evaluation.
11. India – AI-Powered Banking in Assam
First AI-Powered ‘Phygital’ Branch Opened in Guwahati
India’s first AI-powered “phygital” banking branch of Slice Small Finance Bank was inaugurated in Guwahati. The branch is located on GS Road and combines physical banking with digital and artificial intelligence-based services. The word “phygital” refers to a hybrid model where customers can access both in-person services and digital self-service facilities.

The branch includes AI-enabled self-service kiosks, paperless transactions and technology-driven customer assistance. Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest for a record 32nd time on 17 May 2026. He reached the 8,849-metre peak while guiding clients from an expedition company. He first climbed Everest in 1994 and has since climbed it almost every year, except during years when expeditions were closed.
Mountaineering and Sherpa Legacy
Kami Rita Sherpa belongs to the Sherpa community, which has played a central role in Himalayan mountaineering. He was born in Thame village of Nepal’s Solukhumbu district, the same village associated with Tenzing Norgay. His achievement also highlights Nepal’s mountain tourism economy, where Everest expeditions support guides, porters, local businesses and trekking communities. On the same day, Lhakpa Sherpa extended her women’s record by completing her 11th Everest summit. A North Korean women’s football club, Naegohyang FC, arrived in South Korea for the Asian Football Confederation Women’s Champions League semifinal. Hypertension is commonly called a silent killer because many people do not show clear symptoms even when their blood pressure is high. Uncontrolled hypertension increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision problems and premature death.
